With her explosive 1962 book damning DDT, Rachel Carson launched the global environmental movement.
The opening lines of Rachel Carson's 1962 book, Silent Spring, are deceptively comforting, almost as if they were drawn from a syrupy tourism brochure. They describe an idyllic town in America, "where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings". There were prosperous farms, with green fields of grain and hillsides of orchards; white clouds drifted above; deer frolicked in the mist; and birds fed on the berries.
