The transition from fossil fuels has proved more challenging than many expected. Solar and wind power have expanded quickly, but their variable output, dependent on sunlight and the weather, creates serious difficulties for grid operators. Batteries help smooth some of those fluctuations, yet they cannot fully resolve the problem of unreliable supply at scale. Tidal energy, which generates power from predictable ocean currents, offers a distinct set of properties and challenges.
