Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence By Anna Lembke; Published by Dutton; 297 pages; £20

A clinical book that gives the low-down on dopamine, and charts a way to maintain the pain-pleasure balance.

Professor Anna Lembke has over two decades' experience in treating people with addiction at Stanford Hospital and researching the neurology and the socio-economic consequences of substance abuse. She was among the first professionals to flag the dangers of prescription addiction in Drug Dealer MD (2016).

Lembke abstracts simple lessons from the case studies, so this could be considered a self-help manual for de-addiction, though it's a lot more than that.
