Shells are not just a "colourful home", but also a defensive fortress and a biological record of an animal's life.

How the shells of molluscs, other marine organisms, and land snails evolved to facilitate stealth, safety, and strength.

The shells you pick up along seashores are small and seldom colourful. Further inland, terrestrial snail shells are even more bland in appearance. However, if you go deeper into the sea, or to a natural history museum, or just get on the internet, you will see an extraordinary variety in shape, size and pattern. Where did the diversity of shells come from, what purpose do they serve their residents, and how are they made? Centuries of research are now beginning to provide answers to these questions.
