Asteroseismologist Conny Aerts on the significance of studying stellar oscillations.
Conny Aerts has written her name in the stars. The pioneering asteroseismologist – she virtually co-founded the field – has revolutionised scientists' understanding of stellar interiors, exploring stars much hotter and heavier than the Sun. For her sterling scientific contributions, the KU Leuven Professor has won a galaxy of prizes. In 2012, she won the Francqui Prize, considered the Belgian Nobel, and in 2020 the FWO Excellence Prize, billed as the Flemish Nobel. More recently, she secured the 2022 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, and the 2024 Crafoord Prize. Excerpts from an interview:
