Hydrogen is moving from pilot projects to industrial deployment, testing if it can deliver on its promise.

In April 2026, China launched its most ambitious hydrogen-blending pilot to date in Weifang, Shandong province. The project injects a 10% hydrogen blend into the existing natural gas network, supplying fuel to around 100,000 households. If the model is scaled nationally, it could displace an estimated 15 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually and eliminate about 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The pilot is part of China's long-term strategy to make hydrogen a key source of energy. China is not alone. An increasing number of countries are introducing policies and incentives to support hydrogen, while large-scale projects are emerging across the globe. After being largely confined to laboratories and pilot programmes for years, hydrogen is increasingly moving into real-world applications.
